Everyone is Special by Michael Dworkis

1997/5757

Over the years, there have been those who have looked down upon the Kohanim, and Leviim.  They have even been described as the parasites of society, avoiding the hard work or labor of others and living off other person's incomes.  After all, it was a percentage of the average Jew's hard earned crops, the Terumah and Maaser, that provided the Kohanim and Leviim with much of their sustenance.  But what, they demanded, were the Kohanim and Leviim contributing for others in return?

What they do not realize is the benefit that they get from the Kohanim, Leviim and even today's Torah scholars.  Through their learning, and through their holy service, they represent their fellow Jews in the service of Hashem.  In this way they raise the spiritual level of all Jews and cause all Jews to be judged in a more favorable light.  For one who supports a Torah scholar secures himself a share in their holy achievements.
